- Brownie mix: A fudge style brownie mix works best for a rich, dense base. Prepare it according to the package directions before baking. This recipe was tested with Betty Crocker, but any similar 9×13 brownie mix should work.
- Cream cheese: Use full fat cream cheese for the smoothest, creamiest French silk filling. Make sure it’s fully softened so it blends easily without lumps.
- Powdered sugar: Powdered sugar sweetens the filling while keeping it light and smooth. Granulated sugar will not dissolve the same way here.
- Chocolate baking bar: A semi sweet chocolate baking bar melts smoothly and gives the silk layer deep chocolate flavor. Avoid chocolate chips for this step since they don’t melt as smoothly.
- Butter: Unsalted butter lets you control the sweetness and richness of the filling. It melts with the chocolate to create that classic French silk texture.
- Whipped topping: Thawed whipped topping (like Cool Whip) works best for both the filling and the topping. Homemade whipped cream can be used for the top, but stick with a stabilized whipped cream for the filling.
- Mini chocolate chips: Mini chocolate chips add texture to the brownie mix and a pretty finish on top.
How to Make French Silk Brownies with Brownie Mix
Start by baking the brownie base according to the package directions in a 9×13 baking dish.
Once baked, set the brownies aside and let them cool completely before adding any layers.

While the brownies cool, beat the softened cream cheese with vanilla until smooth and creamy.
Add the powdered sugar and mix again until fully combined and silky.

Melt the chopped chocolate and butter together until smooth, then let it cool slightly.
Slowly stir the melted chocolate mixture into the cream cheese mixture until fully incorporated.

Gently fold in the whipped topping until the French silk filling is light and fluffy. Spread the chocolate silk layer evenly over the cooled brownies, then refrigerate until set.
Finish by spreading the remaining whipped topping over the chilled silk layer and sprinkling mini chocolate chips on top. Slice, serve, and enjoy.

French Silk Brownies Recipe Tips
- Mix for fudgy brownies. Prepare your brownie mix following the directions for a fudgy, chewy texture rather than a cake like brownie.
- Boost the chocolate flavor. Add 1 teaspoon of instant espresso powder to the brownie batter to deepen and intensify the chocolate flavor without making it taste like coffee.
- Cool before layering. Make sure the brownies are completely cooled before adding the French silk layer so it sets up properly and holds its shape.
- Chill for clean slices. Refrigerate the brownies until fully set before slicing. I like to chill them overnight, which also makes this an easy make ahead dessert.
- Have fun with the garnish. Finish with mini chocolate chips, a light dusting of cocoa powder, chocolate shavings, or a drizzle of chocolate syrup for extra flair.
