  • Milk chocolate chips: Use good-quality chocolate chips or chopped chocolate bars so the bark melts smoothly and sets with a nice snap. Semi-sweet chocolate chips also work if you prefer a deeper chocolate flavor.
  • Mini pretzels: These create the reindeer antlers. Regular mini twists work best because they hold their shape and sit nicely on the melted chocolate.
  • Red and green M&M’s: Red M&M’s are used for the Rudolph noses, while the green ones add festive color throughout the bark. Sort them from a standard or holiday bag.
  • Candy eyes: Small candy eyes give each piece its reindeer face. Most grocery stores carry them in the baking aisle.
  • Holiday sprinkles: Use your favorite Christmas sprinkles for extra texture and color. Completely optional but makes the bark look more decorated.

How to Make Chocolate Reindeer Bark

Add the chocolate chips to a microwave-safe bowl and heat in 30-second intervals, stirring between each round until completely smooth. You can also melt the chocolate using a double boiler if you prefer.

Pour the melted chocolate onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and use a spatula to spread it into an even layer about 1/4-inch thick.

Press two mini pretzels into the chocolate for antlers, add a red M&M for the nose, and place candy eyes just above it. Scatter green M&M’s and sprinkles over the top while the chocolate is still soft so everything sticks.

Refrigerate for 20 to 30 minutes, or until the chocolate is firm. Once set, break the Reindeer bark into pieces to enjoy right away or package up for gifting.

Recipe Tips

  • Use good-quality chocolate: Better chocolate melts smoother and firms up with a nice snap. If the chocolate looks too thick, stir in a teaspoon of coconut oil or shortening to help it spread.
  • Work quickly after spreading: Have your pretzels, M&M’s, and candy eyes ready to go. The chocolate starts setting fast, and decorating is easiest while it’s still warm.
  • Line the pan well: Parchment paper or a silicone mat ensures the bark lifts right off without sticking or cracking.
  • Keep the layer even: Spread the chocolate to about 1/4 inch thick. Too thin and it breaks easily but too thick and it’s harder to bite into.
  • Chill just until set: Refrigerate Christmas bark just long enough for the chocolate to firm up. Storing it in the fridge longer can soften the pretzels.
  • Break, don’t cut: Once the Rudolph bark is set, break it by hand. Cutting with a knife can crush the pretzels or crack the faces.
