  • Crispix cereal: This light, crispy cereal works especially well for puppy chow because it holds onto the chocolate and powdered sugar coating without getting soggy. Substitute rice Chex if you would like a more traditional recipe.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips: Semi-sweet keeps the snack from being overly sweet and balances the powdered sugar. Milk chocolate can be used, but the result will be sweeter.
  • Peanut butter: Use creamy peanut butter for the smoothest coating. Natural peanut butter is not recommended since the oils can separate and affect texture.
  • Powdered sugar: Tossing the cereal while the coating is still warm helps the sugar stick evenly to every piece.
  • Mini marshmallows (optional): Add these after the puppy chow has cooled slightly so they stay soft and do not melt.

How to Make Crispix Puppy Chow

Start by melting the chocolate chips in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring often so the chocolate melts smoothly. Once melted, stir in the peanut butter until the mixture is creamy and fully combined.

Add the Crispix cereal to a large mixing bowl. Pour the warm chocolate mixture over the cereal and gently stir until all the pieces are evenly coated.

Sprinkle in half of the powdered sugar and gently toss to coat. Add the remaining powdered sugar and continue stirring until the cereal is fully covered.

If using mini marshmallows, stir them in once the mixture has cooled slightly.

Spread the puppy chow onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Recipe Tips

  • Microwave option: You can melt the chocolate in the microwave instead of the stovetop. Heat in 30-second increments, stirring between each round, until smooth, then stir in the peanut butter.
  • Bag method for powdered sugar: For less mess, add the coated Crispix cereal and powdered sugar to a large zip-top bag and gently shake until evenly coated.
  • Prevent seized chocolate: Keep heat low and avoid getting water or steam in the chocolate, which can cause it to seize and turn grainy.
  • Stir gently: Use a spatula and fold carefully so the Crispix stays intact and does not get crushed.
  • Mini marshmallows: If you are not serving the Crispix puppy chow right away, wait to stir in the marshmallows. They can lose their softness and start to feel a little stale after a day.

FAQs

How do I store Crispix puppy chow?

Store puppy chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Keep it in a cool, dry place so the chocolate coating stays firm.

Can I freeze puppy chow?

Yes, puppy chow can be frozen if you enjoy it cold. Store it in an airtight, freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. It will be firmer straight from the freezer. Once fully thawed, the powdered sugar coating can absorb moisture and look less crisp, so it is best enjoyed cold or only lightly thawed.

Can I use a different type of chocolate?

Yes. Semi-sweet chocolate is recommended for balance, but milk chocolate or dark chocolate can be used. Keep in mind that milk chocolate will make the snack sweeter, while dark chocolate gives it a richer flavor.

Can I add extra mix-ins?

Absolutely. Once the puppy chow has cooled slightly, you can add ingredients like M&Ms, peanuts, or extra mini marshmallows. Stir gently so the cereal stays intact.
