- 1 red velvet cake , baked and cooled
- 1 vanilla cake , baked, cooled and tinted green
- 3 cups whipped cream
- 1 cup cream cheese , softened
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Prep cakes. Bake the red velvet and green vanilla cakes according to your recipe or box instructions. Let them cool completely, then crumble them into medium chunks.
Make cream layer. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with the powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth. Fold in the whipped cream until light and fluffy.
Build trifle. Add a layer of red velvet cake to the bottom of trifle cups. Spoon a layer of the cream mixture over the top. Add a layer of green cake, followed by more cream. Continue layering until the cups are full.
Finish and chill. Spread the remaining cream mixture over the top. Sprinkle a mix of red and green cake crumbs for decoration. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving so the layers set.
Tint the vanilla cake before baking.
If you are making these ahead use a stabilized whipped cream such as Cool Whip.
You can make individual trifle cups in clear glasses, small mason jars or make one large trifle in a trifle dish.
